This resource was designed to guide students in analyzing and thinking critically about the film Moana. 15 different questions and activities help students to consider the geography, science, history, influences, plot elements, metaphors, and other connections in the film. The accompanying PowerPoint slides highlight each question or activity as well, complete with directions, rich visuals, graphics, links to videos, moving GIFs and much more.
 
These activities could work for 3rd grade through 8th grade. Elementary grades may need to have some of the questions and activities modeled, modified, scaffolded, or given the option to select a certain number of questions to tackle (e.g. pick 10 of the 15 to answer).
 
Questions and activities include: geography of Hawaii, History of Polynesian voyaging, science of volcanoes forming the Hawaiian islands, learning common words and phrases in Hawaiian, analyzing character prototypes (protagonist, antagonist, anti-hero, etc.), plot elements (background, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution), comparing and contrasting mentor voices in Moana's life (Venn Diagram), connections to literature (Beowulf), thinking critically about Moana's growth throughout the story, Te Fiti vs. Te Ka, understanding metaphors (the Ocean, the Heart of Te Fiti, the Hook), the "moral" of the story, entertainment versus education, Moana versus other recent Disney heroines, and much more.
